Today we visited one of the Watoto children's villages. The Watoto ministry reaches out to orphans in the needy country Uganda, where there are an estimated 2 million orphans. These orphans have lost their father and/or mother, usually through AIDS. Most of these children have been placed with their extended family, but this is often problematic, as the average family in Uganda already has seven children. Currently, there are three Watoto villages with 1700 of some of the neediest children being provided a fresh start at life.
The village we visited is located on a beautiful 144 acre property just outside of the city of Kampala. There is a primary school and a secondary school, as well as accommodation for 100s of children, 8 per home, each with a mother who raises them as her own family.
This is an inspiring ministry. Due to the Watoto children's choirs touring churches all around the world, many are catching the vision and sending resources and people to help build more homes to care for more orphans.
Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us (James 1:27. NLT).
