The church my wife & I planted 10 years ago this year, does very well whilst we are on annual leave - but after three weekends away, they are desperate for our return. In the staff's words, "The services seem hollow with no power drive". Despite consistent training & opportunity to lead under my supervision, we can't seem to rectify this situation. To follow Oswald's advice & take 3 months sabbatical every 4 years would be impossible. I simply don't know if I can even take my accrued 3 months long service leave now that 10 years is up. Some ministers I know take their LSL a month at a time over three years, but LSL's purpose is the extended break to refresh mentally. On paper Oswald's advice seems very good, I wish I could make it a reality.
In retrospect, only very large churches could afford such a strategy. That said, the senior ministers of the very large churches carry a pressure far more acute than someone like me with a church of 300 brilliant members.

Good comment, Darren.

One option for churches/Elders to consider is investing in some strategic visiting ministry during a potential sabbatical, so that the burden of the weekend doesn't fall only on the local team.
